2012 Top Places to Work in PR: Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens

Growth opportunities abound within the office of development and communications at Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, and almost every one of the 11 staff members within the department has been promoted during their time with the agency. Several of the staff members within the department originally came to the agency as interns, eventually moving into full-time positions.

Staff members within the office of development and communications routinely work together, regardless of job description, on events, media relations, marketing and public relations activities. An example of this occurred last year during a weekly creative team meeting. With the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 approaching, team members felt it would be appropriate to commemorate the event and the agency's role. For approximately six months, staff members combed archives, read and reviewed reports and summaries and met with administrators and staff members who were directly involved in the agency’s work following 9/11.

The 9/11 booklet was produced in the fall of 2011, and mailed to approximately 2,500 community residents. Word-of-mouth feedback was strong among those who received the booklet, and the team received overwhelming support from among the board of trustees, administration and staff members.

Because Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens is a nonprofit agency, most staff members are geared toward providing social services to the less fortunate. However, within the office of development and communications, staff members definitely blow off steam from all their hard work with fun activities, including an "Iron Chef" cooking competition and a hot-wings eating contest between staff members.
