Women Weigh in On Biggest Work Obstacles

Women dominate the PR industry everywhere but the executive level. However, a lack of women in the C-Suite is a problem not isolated to the communication field.

Yesterday, Linda Descano, managing director at Citi, sat down to discuss this problem with Douglas Simon, president and CEO of D S Simon Productions Inc, for a webcast sponsored by Akamai and Onstream Media. The talk, which was organized by CommPRO.biz, centered around Citi and LinkedIn's recent collabortation on a survey exploring women's biggest obstacles to upper management and overall career satisfaction. The 2013 Today’s Professional Woman Report survey was conducted among a nationally representative sample of 954 Professional Women LinkedIn members.

Interestingly, the roadblocks relate not only to company culture ("lack of promotion opportunities"), but also to choices made by the women themselves ("lack of interest in staying with their company long enough to advance").

"All of the corporate instability and layoffs mean that we don't look at our employer as a lifetime contract anymore" Descano said.

In addition, of course, is the pressure of "having it all."

When faced with this query, Descano answered, "Let go of the guilt of not being perfect. What are your barometers of success? They should be your filters when answering the question, 'Are you happy?"'"

Here's an infographic garnered from the results of the 2013 Today's Professional Women Report survey.
