Reaching for the Cloud: Basic Cloud Computing Applications

When Laura Borgstede, founder of Calysto Communications, took her agency to the cloud in 2006-2007, she was pretty much on her own in terms of IT know-how. While she wouldn’t reveal all the cloud platforms that she uses to run her global agency (for competitive reasons), Borgstede did share tips on four workhorse cloud applications that she’s used from the start:

  • Phone.com: Clients call the Calysto main number and can find extensions there. It also handles conference calling. Alternative: Skype

  • Microsoft Exchange and Yahoo Instant Messenger: These are basics, says Borgstede. Alternatives: Hyperoffice, Meebo

  • Filesanywhere.com: This is a well-designed, highly responsive Web interface, says Borgstede. It Supports file sharing, versioning, photo sharing and private sites. Alternative: Dropbox

  • Batchbook: Web-based CRM software for smaller businesses that manages and tracks contact information, communications and tasks. “It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that Salesforce.com has,” says Borgstede, who customized Calysto’s database of more than 14,000 contacts in the application. Alternative: Salesforce.com
