Healthcare PR & Marketing News's salary survey findings reflect the industry's continued evolution toward consolidation.

Traditional distinctions between provider and insurers are becoming blurred and job titles and career opportunity continue to reflect the emergence and growth of integrated health networks and managed care organizations. So what does all of this consolidation mean to your career search?

Don't expect to continue on a vertical track. Instead prepare yourself for "horizontal integration at key points of the [industry's] value chain" through managed care mergers and the development of alliances/networks, advises William M. Mercer, an Atlanta-based human resources consulting firm that recently released its 1997 Integrated Health Networks Salary. HPRMN's Salary Survey highlights these key findings for providers and other fully integrated healthcare organizations.

Across the board, pay increase is based on merit with a declining number of organizations factoring in - or even including - cost-of-living adjustments, according to the study.

For executives, merit is used 73% of the time and at the manager/supervisory level, merit is used 70% of the time.

And although the industry is moving toward merged environments, healthcare organizations are still using one formal performance measurement/appraisal system.

The Mercer study found that 84% of healthcare organizations surveyed used one formal system across their entire organization with for-profits relying more heavily on a singular system than not-for-profits.

In terms of salary, executives at multi-market provider management organizations and fully integrated care delivery systems are commanding higher compensation than their more traditional, single hospital-dominated counterparts. The trend continues throughout management.
