It’s rare that the unthinkable happens, but if your organization is hit with violence, or even just bad behavior, here are some tips from leadership consultant Dr. Gaby Cora on dealing with the crisis:
-
Make a list of the critical events that may affect the workplace. Violence is one, but others include conflict, crises and bad behavior that impacts client loyalty and others.
-
Create a joint strategy with the whole team. Include leaders in the discussion, but consider including members of other work groups as well.
-
Always tell the truth, but balance your message with enough information that is consistent with the events. Omit unnecessary details that may only aggravate the situation. Avoid making hypothetical comments during critical times.
-
Ensure your communications during critical times are accurate, succinct and focused.
-
Always include the “people factor.” Show the leaders’ concern and the company’s commitment to improve the overall situation. People always come first.
