2013 Nonprofit PR Awards: PR On a Shoestring Budget

Winner: Henson Consulting Inc. – Paris at the Harris: Building Buzz for the Best in Ballet

In June 2012, the Harris Theater for music and dance in Chicago’s Millennium Park hosted one of the world’s premier ballet company—the Paris Opera Ballet—for a weeklong engagement. The much-anticipated event also included the country’s first-ever live public simulcast of an international ballet company, in the form of a presentation to thousands in Chicago’s millennium Park. The Harris Theater wanted to reach outside the traditional arts press and achieve far-reaching media coverage, leading up to and including the week’s events.

Henson Consulting leveraged event supporter Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as the event spokesperson and raising awareness of the performance and of the Harris Theater as a national arts leader.

Henson created widespread awareness of the Harris Theater and the weeklong Paris Opera Ballet engagement through media placements in dance press, but also in traditional outlets and society pages, to ultimately help the Harris Theater sell tickets and secure a well-attended simulcast to promote Mayor Emanuel’s leadership in the event to encourage media outlets of all kinds to give attention to dance. —Bill Miltenberg
