Here are just a few examples of other ways PR and public affairs' staffs are taking shape:

  • Hill and Knowlton this month brought on board Paul S. Clark. Clark worked for U.S. Senator Fred Thomspon (R.-Tenn.), and during the recent campaign finance investigation, served as spokesman for the Thompson Committee in the Senate;
  • For Marybeth Belsito, founder of a new medical communications company that opened its doors last week in the Big Apple, her first career foray was social work. Today, she's a PR executive and one of Belsito & Company Inc.'s three clients is the New York Foundling Hospital for which it provides $350,000-plus in annual pro bono work;
  • Expertise varies among the six full-time staffers who handle communications for the PR arm of African-American advertising maverick, Chisholm-Mingo Group, New York. Its PR director, Ann Marie Gothard, previously worked in the electric utility industry as a legal assistant and legislative liaison. Chisholm-Mingo works with clients such as Denny's and Kentucky Fried Chicken; and
  • This summer, Washington, D.C.-based public affairs shop, APCO Associates hired Steven A. Mirmina, who came from the law firm of Crowell and Morning where he worked on regulatory matters, dealing with the U.S. Department of Transportation for U.S. and foreign airlines.
