Preparing for Communications Job Changes With a New CEO

PR is sure to experience some re-organizational pains when a CEO is given carte blanche as a change agent. For example, Louis V. Gerstner Jr. joined IBM [IBM] in 1993 and recruited as VP of Communications David Kalis, who previously worked with him at RJR Nabisco and American Express.

If your company hires a new CEO, one way you can measure what affect it will have on communications (and your job!) is researching the leader's past forays. Find out if he or she has been an advocate for communications or if he/she has ever done anything like completely wipe out a PR division, cautions executive recruiter Judith Cushman.

Additionally, if your job is axed, stick to two main strategies: Don't personalize the move because it's the nature of business; and consult with an attorney and your tax advisor about an exit package.

Sometimes, a company will agree to pay relocation costs; extend your salary until you find a new job; or ensure medical coverage if you or a family member has survived a debilitating disease that might affect getting insurance coverage, says Cushman. (Judith Cushman & Associates, 425/392-8660)
