Media Insight: The Boston Globe

Editor's Note: Like every other major media outlet, the climate in the editorial office at the Boston Globe is always frenetic. Due to the controversy surrounding British au pair Louise Woodward, life has been crazier than ever for the editorial staff, possibly from the pressure to put a regional spin on the event. The editors we were able to speak with were pleasant and succinct about how they like to see things flow in their respective departments. Daily circulation: 466,317; Sunday circulation: 751,377.

Thursdays generally are bad days for the Living/Arts staff because that's the day they're putting together the Sunday Arts Section. Wilkinson says if something is important enough, it never hurts to call and see what the staffing situation is like. The best times to call are in the morning or mid-afternoon. During mid-morning, most editors are in departmental meetings or at news conferences. Wilkinson prefers phone calls and faxes. She generally discourages e-mail because she would rather look at a hard copy. When you leave a message be as specific as possible.
Wilkinson suggests that when following up on a fax don't call just to ask an editor if he/she received your release. It's best to provide the editor with additional information or ask if he/she has any questions that you can answer about the press release. Another reason to call would be to remind an editor that an event or an important person is going to be in town. Also, communicate with your colleagues: Wilkinson says that she once received calls from two people at the same agency about the same topic.
Business/Finance

The financial portion of The Globe includes the column, "Boston Capital," which focuses on the financial services industry.
Columnist, "Boston Capital" Steven Bailey
Fax: 617/929-3183

Financial Reporter Steve Syre
Fax: 617/929-3183

Mornings are best, any day of the week. For features, Bailey would like to receive faxes in advance; for news, he wants phone calls. Bailey is looking for exclusive stories, ones that will give an advantage over the competition (i.e., The Boston Herald) but doesn't want mass faxes or pitches. He is mainly interested in speaking to people at companies.
Focus

This section contains week-in-review segments, including offbeat stories concerning culture, politics and academics.
Focus Editor Jim Concannon

Fax: 617/929-9256
Early in the week is best for Concannon, since "Focus" goes into production on Thursdays and Fridays; however, if an idea is good enough and current enough, he'll be glad to speak with you. Phone calls and faxes are fine. If it is a timely issue, Concannon will quickly get back to you. Concannon looks for topics that are out of the ordinary - things that people haven't read before in other places - yet nothing too off-the-wall. If a topic raises your eyebrows, he will be interested in talking with you.
