How Do You Stack Up?

One in every two communicators (51%) has direct access to senior management at least once a day while only 5% have limited access, according to a joint study by the
International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and PRSA. The findings, to be released in the April-May issue of Communication World, an IABC publication, were based
on a survey of nearly 40,000 professional communicators worldwide to gain perspective on trends in the workplace, as well as salary and budget levels. Some of the findings:

  • The average consultant salary ($110,000) is considerably higher than its corporate counterpart ($63,000). Bonuses are also higher for the consultant ($20,000 vs.
    $9,000).
  • Less than 25% of communicators who responded are professionally accredited.
  • Median budgets are $365,000.
  • 47% of respondents received a perk within the last 12 months. For 32% it came in the form of a vacation.
  • Seven out of 10 communicators are female.
  • 62%have documented objectives for their communication budgets. Of those, 68% are in quantifiable terms.
