2013 CSR Awards: Environmental Stewardship

Winner: DuPont - Drive to Zero Landfill Communications Campaign

The DuPont Building Innovations business in 2009 embarked on a three year "Drive to Zero Landfill" program to completely eliminate the 81 million pounds of landfill waste generated by the business annually. Earlier this year (January 2012), DuPont announced that its Building Innovations business had achieved zero landfill status by reducing, reusing and recycling waste at all manufacturing sites globally where the company produces DuPont.

To gain visibility for the Building Innovations business achievement, DuPont identified and conducted outreach to tier one and trade media and focused on DuPont industry reporters, environmental editors and bloggers. It also developed a media resources web page on DuPont.com with images of new products created from manufacturing waste, created a video to tell the zero landfill story, produced professional quality B-roll for journalists and used traditional and social media channels to announce DuPont being named the recipient of McDonald's first-ever Supplier Sustainability Award. —Bill Miltenberg
