Californians Consider Medical Research a Top Priority

As the top ranked state in federal funding for medical, science and engineering research, California is viewed as a model for collaborative efforts among universities, and
public and private organizations. Its residents also recognize the value of being a research leader and are willing to pay for the privilege, according to a Research!America Poll.
Ninety-four percent of Californians say that spending money on scientific and engineering research is important in terms of providing jobs.

Other survey findings include:

  • Nearly 80% of respondents would approve of California offering financial incentives to attract new medical research opportunities to the state.
  • Since 1996, trust in pharmaceutical companies as sources of medical information and research rose 6%.
  • The level of trust in physicians rose 9% from 1996.

The poll surveyed 800 California adults this summer.
