Not all social media platforms are created equal. Each one has its own unwritten rules and regulations.

And while most PR professionals have Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook down pat, some of the other social networks can be difficult to navigate.

With that in mind, here are five tips for public relations professionals getting started on Instagram, compliments of Jessica Henry, director of marketing and public relations at Not For Sale.

> Follow relevant “Instagramers” if you are starting out. Learn from influencers and your competition.

> Posting once a day or every couple of days is appropriate. Instagram is not Twitter—you don't have to constantly update.

> Be spontaneous and personal. This isn't LinkedIn: You can be a little edgier on this platform.

> Use hashtags.

> Pay attention to what photos people are interacting with, and provide more content in that direction.
