5 Job Interview Questions that Get to the Truth

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.7% in November, the lowest rate in four years. But in light of how schizophrenic the economy has been for the last few years, it may be wise for PR pros to take the latest unemployment rate with a pillar of salt.

Still, the latest unemployment report could be a harbinger of a pick up in hiring. And even if the unemployment rate were to backslide in the next few months, PR managers and directors need to prepare to fill any job vacancies in their departments and agencies that—regardless of fluctuations in the economy—inevitably pop up throughout the year.

With that in mind, we offer a quintet of questions for PR pros that can help them determine who are the best possible job candidates, whether it’s for an account executive, social media guru or specialist in crisis communications:

  • Why do you think you would be a good fit for this company/agency and this corporate culture?

  • Can you recall a PR campaign in which the client (or chieftain) changed his or her mind at the eleventh hour? How did you respond?

  • What is your general strategy for conflict resolution?

  • How do you assuage concerns among companies and C-level managers who are not yet sold on the value of social media?

  • PR pros have to juggle a growing number of balls these days. How do prioritize your activities so none of the assignments get short shrift?

  1. Good ones! I have been interviewing a lot lately and I appreciate focused questions like that, as opposed to more cardboard ones.
