- Keep improving your writing skills: Take classes, read good writers and work with good editors. Good writers are hard to find, but fresh content is the most valuable commodity on the Internet and in PR these days. Become known as a talented writer and you will always be able to find work.
- Use the Internet to your advantage in media relations: "Spray and pray" pitching tactics are dead. Everyone you pitch has a presence on the Internet, whether it's their own body of work (blog, online news articles, etc.), social media profiles or in search results. Pitching today is all about using that information—which is already at your fingertips—to customize your pitches and build valuable, long-term media relationships.
- Everything in PR is now measurable, thanks to powerful, inexpensive tools: Design your PR campaigns from the start with quantitative goals in mind, and then once you are under way, use early data to adjust your strategy.
