When Personal Issues Collide, Don’t Forget the Importance of Facebook

The good thing about social media is that it gives everyone a platform to express opinions.

The bad thing about social media is that it gives everyone a platform to express opinions.

For everything good about Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and others, the negative that comes up often overshadows what makes social networks a beneficial tool for communicators and organizations.

As President Obama and Governor Romney prepare for their final debate on Oct. 22, the dangers of social media have come to light as engaging in politics on Facebook has been a lose-lose for some personal relationships.

According to a recent report by USA Today, the mix of a divided country and hot-button political issues and Facebook commentary have become an online landmine.

Despite the personal effects of discussing politics online, both candidates have used Facebook throughout the campaign to boost engagement with potential voters.

While sometimes interaction online does goes awry, there are still ways organizations can properly engage with consumers on Facebook.

In a recent PR News Facebook webinar, Able Zakes, global vice president, media relations TerraCycle offered the following tips to get PR value from Facebook:

  • Post your online media placements on Facebook: This will get more traffic and eyes to your news and make news outlets happy to cover you again in the future.

  • Use Facebook tabs as MMRs: You can use a Facebook Tab as a multi-media release, featuring info and images giving easy access to your preferred journalists without having to add to your website.

  • Use Facebook promotions as PR opps: Doing an online promotion or contest? Create a press release to pitch to relevant online media from mommy blogs to PR/marketing trades.
