Providers, Payers Have Mutual Online Priorities

There are few business goals that hospitals and managed care organizations can agree on, but moving business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions to
the Web is one of them. The second annual National Managed Health Care Congress (NMHCC) IT survey found that payers and providers are making online electronic data interchange a
top priority.

Payers projected a near doubling of Internet-enabled B2C transactions during the upcoming year and a more than 50% increase in their B2B transactions. Providers aren't far
behind, projecting a nearly 90% surge in online B2C transactions and a 40% increase in B2B transactions.

Beyond IT priorities, payers and providers have a mutual interest in using the Internet to improve customer satisfaction, quality of care, profitability and market share.

The survey, sponsored by Microsoft Corp., Sheldon I. Dorenfest & Associates and Compaq Computer Corp., was conducted among thousands of attendees at the NMHCC 2000
conference.
