On The Pulse: Healthcare Trends & Surveys

By Y2K, Uninsured Americans To Reach 60M

Outreach to uninsured Americans will need to intensify in the new millenium. By 2007, the Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) anticipates that one out of every five adults (young to middle-age) will be uninsured.

Addressing the problem of the uninsured will need to be "job No. 1" for healthcare policy makers and industry communicators.

Key study findings include:

  • The number of uninsured Americans could grow as high as 60 million by 2007 if the nation experiences an economic downturn and higher-than-anticipated healthcare costs.
  • Even with a healthy economy, the number of uninsured Americans is expected to climb at an alarming rate.
  • Nine out of 10 Americans with private insurance get it through an employer.
