Media Insight: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

P.O. Box 4689
Atlanta, Ga. 30302
404/526-5151

At its heart, this daily is a city paper, although it wants to be considered
in the ranks of the nationals. Reaching a relatively young and affluent Atlanta
population (the city's median household income is $67,058 vs. $55,443 nationally),
the Journal-Constitution often looks to the high-tech angle of a story.
Aptly, the newspaper's complementary site (http://www.ajc.com)
is the sixth-most-linked-to local site in the United States, according to American
Journalism Review
.

Pitch Tips

There's no idea that the editors at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution would refuse to listen to, Public Editor George Edmonson said. He recommends contacting the
appropriate section editor first by phone to pitch an idea. If he or she likes it, you'll probably be asked to email or fax more information, Edmonson says.

But there's at least one idea not worth pitching, because it's unlikely it will make it into print. "We tend not to focus on crassly commercial things," Edmonson said.

Releases can find a home in the Journal-Constitution. "There's a lot of columns," he says, adding that snippets of releases focusing on anything from promotions to
financing may be printed there.

Comments

The business section is probably the most receptive to pitches, Edmonson says. Assistant Managing Editor for Business James Mallory takes press releases via email, but suggests
PR professionals can get a quicker response if they fax releases to Sheila Garland, the daily editor for business.

But Mallory warns that ideas should be "significant news events." Want a business feature on your new Web site or groundbreaking ceremony? "Don't bother," Mallory says.

Edmonson and Mallory agreed that pitches do not need to focus on the Atlanta area. "But a local spin is going to get our reaction," Mallory says.
