Internal Relations: Computer Intrusions on the Rise

The theft of corporate information via the computer has doubled in three years, reports a study from Kessler & Associates, a New York-based investigative and accounting firm. In 1997 this form of theft claimed $20 million worth of damages. In 1999, it jumped to $42 million.

Disgruntled employees were responsible for 35% of the break-ins and are the biggest source of intrusion. Others responsible for corporate security breaches were:

  • Hackers - 28%
  • Other U.S. corporations - 18%
  • Foreign corporations - 11%
  • Foreign governments - 8%
