The results are based on responses from 561 care providers, encompassing more than 42,500 employees.

Salary information provided in this survey is based on the following key factors:
Base Salary Averages: represented in the 1000s
Salary Employee Weighted: Base salary reported by all organizations, current as of April 1, 1997. Statistics are based on the average of individual salary rates for each employee.
Total Cash Compensation-Receivers: Base salary plus reported incentive for all incumbents receiving an incentive payment.
Consolidation/Managed Competition: Shakeout of marginal players -- fewer HMOs/insurers in each market.
Unstructured/Loose Framework: Dominated by major indemnity insurers. Few provider systems -- beginning formation of provider networks.
Northeast: Maine, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Southeast: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
North Central: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
