Cyber PR: Middleberg Survey: More Proof Positive of Media’s Need for Net

The just-released results of the "4th Annual Middleburg/Ross Media in Cyberspace" show that out of a sampling of approximately 600 journalists, almost half said they or their cohorts go online every day - up from nearly 33 percent a year ago, 23 percent two years ago and 16 percent three years ago.

Also, e-mail, the Web and usetnet newsgroups were labeled as being primary sources for story ideas by 9 percent of the respondents. That's the same ranking that the wires received. The study was released Feb. 12 at a Business Wire news conference hosted by the Newseum in New York.

But the study also shows that original content is seeing a surge online. Last year's survey revealed that only 7 percent of newspapers with Web sites said 50 percent or more of the pictures and news they posted was original and hadn't appeared in the print version. This year, that number had jumped to 20 percent. (Middleburg, 212/888-6610)
