Three Ways to Conduct a Successful Media Training Session

In this 24/7 media world, knowing how to present oneself on camera, radio, in print or a social media platform, has never been more important. In this vein, media training for execs is critical. Following are three tips to conduct a successful media training session:

  • Perform a mock interview on your client. Hire a photographer to shoot and light the session. Decide on two mock scenarios that involve your client: one positive, one negative. Then play reporter and ask the client questions about the scenarios. Play the videotape back for the client and provide instant feedback on his/her performance. This is a very effective way to illustrate media training techniques in real time.
  • Emphasize the importance of follow-up and building relationships. Advise the client to build a rapport with the reporters who cover him or her by giving them tips on upcoming stories, lists of charitable organizations their company supports, and referring the reporter to other sources of information.
  • Talk about social media. The so-called mainstream media of newspapers, radio, print and television still dominates, but savvy companies use social networking sites and blogs to get their message out. Incorporate a discussion of the importance of social media management into all media training sessions.
