CSR Awards 2015: Hall of Fame

The Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse

In the 15th year of its award-winning National Backpack Program, the Office Depot Foundation plans to donate approximately 200,000 school sackpacks in seven brand new, colorful designs this year to help children around the world succeed in school. By the end of the year, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have donated more than 3.7 million backpacks and sackpacks to deserving children around the globe since 2001.

The sackpacks, which have been completely reimagined for 2015, feature seven kid-friendly designs—two for boys, two for girls and three that are unisex. Each sackpack holds a zippered pouch containing essential school supplies—a pen, a pencil, four crayons, a pencil sharpener, an eraser and a 6-inch ruler. The specially designed sackpacks are manufactured exclusively for the Office Depot Foundation. Highly contemporary in their design, they reflect and respond to changes in the ways that children are taking their materials to school. Made from the same sturdy material as backpacks, they are water-resistant and lined to provide extra protection for their contents. They feature strong ropes and have no metal parts.

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds

In 2009, Time Warner Cable launched the philanthropic initiative Connect a Million Minds, that challenged parents, mentors and others to connect over one million students to after-school STEM activates in order to address the decline in young people’s interest in STEM education and careers.

To date, Time Warner CAble has provided cash and in-kind investments far in excess of its original $100 million commitment to inspire student interest in STEM. In May 2014, together with its partners, TWC exceeded its goal of connecting one million students to STEM opportunities and today, continues connecting students to high quality STEM learning opportunities.
