Sexual Issues Considered Taboo Subject for Menopausal Women

Physicians assume that menopausal women are uncomfortable discussing sexual concerns with them, according to a survey by the menopause support group, PRIME PLUS/Red Hot Mamas.

The report found that because of this lack of discussion, the sexual relationships of menopausal women are suffering unnecessarily and there is low awareness of the role
hormones play in improving sexual health.

OB/GYNs and primary care physicians can play a major role in breaking the silence. The survey found:

  • 76% of women are very or somewhat comfortable discussing sexual issues with their physicians;
  • 56% would most likely talk to their physician if they were experiencing a sexual problem; and
  • there's a limited understanding of how the hormone levels significantly decrease during menopause.

The PRIME PLUS report is based on surveys of more than 2,200 physicians, menopausal women and their partners. (PRIME PLUS/Red Hot Mamas, 203/431-3902)
