WSJ Weekend Journal

This just-launched section of The Wall Street Journal gives this conversative paper of record a new face. But its editors are still a bit tough to track down and some are downright pithy. Although the section stays true to the WSJ's exploratory editorial style, it's not stodgy. Expect, however, to pay your dues courting these journalists.

Sections Editors Days To Contact/ Days To Avoid Methods Comments
News - This section is as witty as it is wise. One of its first issues was a mish-mash of news that aptly debuted its purpose: the section is devoted to how people live and the issues that make their lifestyles compelling. Standard features include Home Front and Travel. But the section also includes tips such as what chardonnay works best with a casual dinner at home or how to find the best men's white shirt via mail. Weekend Journal Editor Joanne Lipman Fax: 212/416-3783/84 Every day but Friday and Monday are extremely busy. Faxes. It took us several days and several calls to get Lipman on the phone, but we found out quick enough how she dreads the phone call out of the blue. Lipman says the range of stories they sniff out (travel, food, wine, sports, cars, clothing, literary contests, exhibits, hot hometowns, real estate, commentaries) lends itself to ample pitch opportunities, but most of what the weekend section uses is handled by freelancers or its 30 fulltime staffers.
Leisure & Arts - With the exception of regulars such as the movie reviews, three arts- or leisure-related pieces appear in the weekend section. On the arts side, it's mostly fine arts and performing arts. The travel side offers a little more flexibility toward other chic happenings. Leisure & Arts Editor Raymond Sokolov Fax: 212/416-2658 Send info. one month in advance. Thursdays and Fridays are scheduling days for the next section. Faxes or snail mail. We called Sokolov on several occasions on separate days, but we never actually connected with him. His assistant told us that getting Sokolov to return a call to someone he doesn't know is an exercise in futility. When it comes to pitching, the smartest thing you can do is read this section from front to back for several weeks and offer a pitch created just for the section!
