Editors at Southern Living, the genteel magazine that's the South's polished editorial pearl, aren't hip on the phone pitch and were a little standoffish. But like all the other media execs we've encountered, PR pros don't appear to be hitting the mark and doing their homework to uncover what's a proper pitch for the magazine!

Online - Southern Living on the Web (http://www.southern-living.com) features re-edited content from the print side, but is used to promote and sell these other branded SL products: House Plans, Garden and Summer Vacations. The site provides a splash page icon that links to a newstand specifying when the magazines hit the stands. | Managing Editor, Clay Nordan, E-mail: letters@ southernliving.com | Content is updated two or three times a week and ideally, pitch ideas needed to be filtered through editors who oversee the print magazine. However, Nordan isn't opposed to receiving ideas sent electronically since he'll pass them on to the appropriate print editors. | 9Nordan was very clear about the reasoning behind the site and was quick to point out that the editorial input entails deciding what should be converted into HTML and making sure that current information is placed online. |
Food & Home - Your mind's your treasure chest here since the range of topics are colorful and many. Dish up pitches about home features and tips or try your hand at offering expertise in recipes, parties, kitchen equipment and family cooking. | Executive Food Editor, Kaye Adams, Fax: 205/877-6700, Lead time: 4 to 6 months, Home Editor, Julia Thomason, Fax: 205/877-5910, Lead time: 3 to 4 months | Faxes. | Adams doesn't want phone pitches. Eight food editors route and pass on story ideas. "I want something in writing so everyone on the staff can review it," Adams says. "We don't toss here - we file." Suggestions for home features have to in- clude photos of the interior and exterior of the house. Color is preferred. |
