Outside Magazine

Nature doesn't need any PR help and apparently most of the editors at Outside magazine don't need assistance from you pros as well. But this four-color publication is more than an outdoor lover's magazine: it explores what's colorful (i.e., the family that surfs together, stays together) about the relationship between man and the environment and nothing is flash-in-the-pan analysis. You better, however, have a few gos in the boxer's ring to toughen yourself up for these blunt editors.
Sections : News
A virtual guidebook to outside sports, recreation and human feats, the coverage ranges from first-person columns to diaries of sailing vacations. Even the articles that have more of a commercial or business thrust adhere to the magazine's push toward telling tales - not just publishing news.
Editors/Days to Contact/To Avoid: Senior Editor, Kevin Fardarko. In the more than a year we've been putting Media Insight together, we've never had to give you this advice: no faxes, no mail, no calls, no e-mail. Fedarko was about as receptive to relaying his pitch preferences as Saddham was in discussing his chemical weapon supply.
Methods: Maybe someone will study the magazine and surprise Fedarko with a meaninful, insightful and needed story idea.
Comments Fedarko gets an F for his people skills, but an A for telling us precisely what he wants from you: not a darn thing. "I don't work as an advertiser for people, but you can't fathom how many pitches I get that are product- or marketing-related."
Fedarko's responsibility is front-of-the-book content.

What is appropriate are broad categories: environmentalism, sports, new books, popular culture.
Editors/Days to Contact/To Avoid: Senior Editor, Adam Horowitz. Fax: 505/989-4700. He's working three to four months out.
Methods: Faxes.
Comments Another editor who's less-than-delighted with PR agency reps and others in the communications field, Horowitz was a tad bit more accommodating than Fedarko, but appears to have the same feeling that he's swamped with pitches that aren't appropriate for the pub. For a pitch to meet Horowitz's standards, he better have some "self-awareness" of the theme or concept once he's entertained your idea.
