PR-Friendly Events
As the year comes to a rapid close, the Best/Worst Lists of 2004 are in full force (look for our own said list in the Dec. 15 issue of PR News). For now, however, we
thought it would be useful to provide to PR pros a selective directory of 2005 events (via News Generation) that take place in days, weeks or months and how such events can
bring relevance and strength to PR campaigns. We asked Susan Matthews Apgood, president and co-founder of News Generation, for a selective rundown on some of the more popular
events in 2004 and how PR execs linked their clients' messages to specific events using radio.
- In March, the American Cancer Society was able to link its campaign of combating colorectal cancer with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month though an audio news
release targeted to the state of Florida. - The March of Dimes' PR campaign to increase awareness regarding research of premature babies motivated hundreds of volunteers, supporters and parents to rally together
on Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. in November as part of Prematurity Awareness Month. March of Dimes utilized radio to have actresses Brigitte Wilson Sampras and Holly Marie
Combs interviewed by stations around the country, and coupled it with an audio news release. - November was American Diabetes Month and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Diabetes Education
Program (NDEP) urged the 18.2 million Americans with diabetes to learn how they can reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke through completing nearly 30 interviews with
general audience stations, African American stations and Spanish-language stations.
