Cracking the Glass Ceiling

Eighty-four percent of Fortune 500 companies have at least one woman on their board, versus 62% of Fortune 501-1000 companies, according to the 1999 Catalyst Census of Women
Board Directors of the Fortune 1000 study. The differences don't end there.

  • Thirty-nine percent of the Fortune 500 companies have at least two women directors, compared with 20% in the Fortune 501-1000.
  • Fortune 500 companies are five times as likely as their 501-1000 counterparts to have three or more women directors.

Industries with the highest percentages of women board directors are toys and sporting goods, soaps and cosmetics, savings institutions and publishing and printing.
