Children’s Health Coverage Jumps 50%

Outreach efforts to reach the nation's uninsured children under the federal Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are working. In the past six months, CHIP enrollment has grown by more than 50 percent, according to an analysis of national and local figures by the Alliance for Health Reform in Washington, D.C.

As of June 30, 1.3 million uninsured children received health coverage up from 835,00 in December 1998. Significant increases in California, Florida and New York accounted for almost half the enrollment growth. Texas was the only state where enrollment declined.
