Yankees Win Again—on Social Media

It's opening day for Major League Baseball, and already the season's over. Guess which team took the crown? That's right, Mets and Red Sox fans, the Yankees did it again.

The crown in question is for the kings of social media. Seattle-based social media agency Banyan Branch ran the numbers on social media buzz for the 30 MLB teams, and at the top of the list and head of heap are the New York Yankees. Banyan Branch determined that, based on the number of Facebook likes and Twitter followers, the Yankees are the most popular team in social media. The Boston Red Sox are in second place, followed by the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants. The Giants, perhaps influenced by their proximity to Silicon Valley, are the most active team on Twitter.

The American League is more popular than the National League on Facebook, which is disappointing considering the savagery of the designated hitter rule. The Yankees' Nick Swisher has the most Twitter followers (1.5 million) among active players.
