Timing is everything when it comes to making a successful media pitch. Catch a reporter at a bad time and you might as well be selling tickets to last year's Super Bowl. That's why Goldman & Associates recently introduced an online PR Quiz (at www.goldmanassociates.com) to answer some of the more burdensome "whens." For example:
Question: What is the best time of day to follow up with a reporter after sending a news release?
Answer: For newspaper or broadcast, find out when the deadline is and call at least two hours in advance or an hour or so after. If it's a juicy tip, call anytime, but make sure the tip is juicy for the reporter, not the client or company.
Question: What is the best day of the week and the best time of day to hold an event if you're hoping to attract news coverage?
Answer: Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays are the days. The best time falls between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. During the midweek newsrooms are fully staffed.
