DNC Releases New Web Ad: "Desperate Times"

July 31, 2008 | 11:58 am

WASHINGTON, July 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike questioning the increasingly nasty and desperate tone of John McCain's campaign, the Democratic National Committee today released a web ad called "Desperate Times." The ad highlights the fact that, despite promising to "wage a respectful campaign," McCain has resorted to questioning Senator Obama's patriotism and launching false and misleading attacks that have been widely debunked. His campaign has stooped so low that one of McCain's former advisors called his most recent ad "childish" and said the campaign's strategy "diminishes John McCain." [The Atlantic, 7/30/08]

"Like so many other promises cast aside in his pursuit of the White House, John McCain's promise to run a respectful campaign didn't even make it to his convention," said DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney. "We all respect John McCain's service to our country, but he has clearly become an honorable man running a deeply dishonorable campaign. The American people deserve better, and John McCain knows it."

TEXT: McCain Promised a New Kind of Campaign…

MCCAIN: "We need to have change in America. We need to do things differently. I want to prove to you that I will wage a respectful campaign." [McCain Town Hall, Thomasville, AL, 4/21/08]

TEXT: …But Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures.

HAGEL: "Yeah, I think John is treading on some very thin ground here when he impugns motives and when we start to get into 'you're less patriotic than me, I'm more patriotic.'" [CBS Face the Nation, 7/27/08]

QUESTION: "Joe Klein, writing in Time Magazine, says 'This is the ninth presidential campaign I've covered. I can't remember a more scurrilous statement by a major party candidate. It smacks of desperation.' Those are pretty strong words from Joe Klein, whom you obviously know." [CNN Late Edition, 7/27/08]

QUESTION: "You admit, that's a pretty stunning charge." [MSNBC, Morning Joe, 7/30/08]
