BBDO New York Dominates Commercial Emmy Nominations

July 20, 2007 | 3:32 pm

NEW YORK, JULY 20 /PRNewswire/ -- BBDO New York dominated the Commercial Emmy nominations announced yesterday, with three out of the seven spots tapped this year by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The three spots were created for three different clients -- Cingular (now the new AT&T), GE and Brand Pepsi -- and represent the first time work for these brands has been nominated for a Prime Time Emmy.

BBDO was the only agency to receive multiple nominations. The agency has a rich history with the Emmys: it was the first recipient of the Prime Time Commercial Emmy Award in 1997 for a commercial it created on behalf of HBO. Last year, BBDO won again for a commercial created on behalf of FedEx. In fact, this also marks the third year in a row - and the seventh time in the eleven-year history of this award - that advertising created by BBDO New York has been nominated for an Emmy.

"BBDO is about delivering compelling commercial content across all media platforms," said David Lubars, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, BBDO North America. "However, television still remains the most widely viewed medium. These nominations are a reminder that BBDO's legacy in creating great, award- winning TV commercial messages is still very much alive and well."

Cingular's "Battle" takes the drama of the cell-phone-gifted-teen cliché' and cleverly turns it on its head. The spot promotes Cingular's Go Phone service and opens on a scene of a high-pitched argument over a cell phone between a mother and daughter. But instead of exchanging angry, agitated barbs, they are exchanging compliments: "Why do you insist on treating me like an adult?" the young woman shrieks. "Because you insist on acting like one!" the mother shoots back, right in her daughter's face. "You're getting this new phone!" The nominated spot is the latest honor Cingular advertising has received this year. The campaign was awarded a Gold EFFIE for marketing effectiveness by the New York American Marketing Association. Last month, the company's "Fewest Dropped Calls" campaign won a Silver Lion at Cannes.

GE "Jar" is one of the latest commercials in the company's award-winning "Ecomagination" campaign that first launched in 2005. The spot tells the story of a boy, a jar and the perfect birthday gift, in an effort to highlight GE's efforts harnessing the wind to produce energy. The commercial features the music of the legendary singer, Donovan, and previously won awards at AICP and the National ADDYs.

Pepsi "Pinball" is one of the commercials from the brand's new "More Happy" campaign that was launched earlier this year. It features a young man unknowingly embarking on the ride of his life as be cracks open a can of Pepsi. Simulating a real-life game of pinball, a Pepsi globe catapults him through the streets of San Francisco. The spot was named one of Adweek's "Best" in February of 2007.
