Assumptions that men are too apathetic about their health are overblown, according to a consumer poll conducted by LaurusHealth.com, a VHA-sponsored health information Web
site. Wives and girlfriends are especially guilty of underestimating the interest men have in health.
The key gender discrepancies uncovered by the study include:
- 49% of men are concerned about heart disease vs. 40% of women who perceive this concern.
- 46% are concerned about prostate cancer compared to 33% of women.
- Men are less anxious about hair loss than women think (18%) with only 13% identifying it as a concern.
The study polled 1,000 U.S. adults by telephone.
