Pre-Thanksgiving Special: Trio of Updates From Facebook & Pinterest

Do you use Facebook or Pinterest on behalf of your brand or clients? You've got three new reasons to be thankful, in advance of next week's Thanksgiving holiday.

1: Facebook Launches Job-Listing App

Facebook has launched a job app that its network of 1 billion users can use to sift through more than 1.7 million jobs. The Social Jobs app, which went live on Nov. 14, is a result of Facebook’s year-old partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), DirectEmployers Association and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.

The app has job listings from other online job boards like BranchOut, DirectEmployers Association, Work4Labs, Jobvite and Monster.com.

LinkedIn may be the best network for both employers and job searchers, but a recent NACE survey found that Facebook is emerging as an important factor in linking qualified jobs with qualified candidates. According to the survey, 50% of employers are using Facebook in their hiring process, and 90% of companies stated that Facebook has decreased the amount of print advertising needed with regard to their recruiting efforts.

2: Facebook Introduces a Brand-Pages-Only Feed

Facebook also rolled out a special "pages only" feed on Nov. 14, in which brands, and only brands, are on full display. Users can access the new feed view from the home page by clicking "pages feed" on the lefthand side of the page. According to Wired, the feed will select the most relevant pages posts for you algorithmically, meaning that you aren’t guaranteed to see all posts from all the pages you follow. But you will see more content from brand pages than you would in the aggressively filtered, regular news feed.

While this may make it easier for brands to gain visibility within this second feed, the question is, what will make users want to go out of their way—away from their friends—to see the posts?

3: Pinterest for Brand Page Managers

Pinterest began unveiling new accounts designated for businesses on Nov. 14. According to AdAge, although these new account pages won't look different from other Pinterest pages, Pinterest has made the following tweaks for new business accounts:

  • Pinterest has included a new feature for authenticating a website that will be part of the signup process, and which will direct account owners to a Pinterest how-to for businesses.

  • It has also provided new terms of service for businesses, "making explicit that use of the platform for commercial purposes is accepted without mentioning retail or advertising," according to AdAge.

  • Pinterest announced two new widgets to enable both business and individual account owners to embed pins and boards on third-party sites.
