PR Life: What Does Your Child Think You Do for Work?

Since the start of the Covid pandemic, more work has been done remotely, allowing for our children to see some of the ins-and-outs of what we do on a daily basis. However, a kid's brain can come up with some magical ideas, and you may be surprised to learn what they think a PR professional actually does for work.

In honor of today's (April 27) Take Your Kid to Work Day (also known as Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day), PRNEWS asked the communications industry, "What does your child think you do for work?"

The answers did not disappoint.

"According to my 6 year old, 'Be on the phone all the time and go to lots and lots of meetings.'"

-Yolanda Brignoni, Vice President, External Affairs and Communications, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

"If you're in PR, your kids, your parents, your friends, will never, ever, ever--ever!--understand what you do for a living. Ever."

Parry Headrick, Founder, Crackle PR

"Tells other people what to do. And eats strawberries and the yummiest blueberries. (I work for a group of berry growers.)"

-Jackie Hampton, Director, kglobal

"They think I tell stories, which I think is the perfect way to describe PR!"

-Charlie Terenzio, SVP of Media Advantage Strategy, Newswire

"Mine thinks I am a storyteller, too!"

-Randi Brown, Public Relations Account Executive, Red Knot

"My kids think my job is to create distractions and disruptions for them as I solve problems for others by talking loudly on the phone at all hours of the day and night."

-Dan Rene, Managing Director, kglobal

"After years of working for NBA teams, my little ones think I play basketball for a living. I'm 5'2'."

-Mandy Gutmann, Communications, Social Responsibility and Government Relations Executive

"They assume I collect swag."

-Chase, Head of Communications, StreamElements

"During the pandemic, it was cool for them to see me working with journalists to have a story that aired on the news that we could watch together that night. Now I'm pretty sure they think I 'talk on the phone with my work friends all day.'"

-Kim Gorode, Director, Global External Communications, Animal Health, Merck

"Sells tacos. She's not wrong."

-Matt Prince, Director, Marketing Communications and PR, Taco Bell

And, from the PRNEWS team...

"5: 'I think you program things.' 8: 'I don't know. What did you say, brother?'"

-Tai Nichols, Conference Content Manager, PRNEWS

"Email, and do video meetings with people from the guest room."

-Erika Bradbury, Editorial Director, PRNEWS
