WHERE POLITICS AND SCHOLARS MEET

Socrates would be proud. Louisiana State University's Manship School of Mass Communication will launch its new Center for Media and Public Affairs on Jan. 1. The center seeks to elevate the quality of public discourse and will be a focal point for discussions of contemporary issues related to media and public affairs. As a secondary concern, university officials hope the new center will attract top students, scholars and professionals in the field, according to Chancellor Mark Emmert. The center's activities will be closely tied to a new Ph.D. program in mass communication and public affairs. In this role, it will support research, host symposia and conferences, and collaborate with LSU Press to publish a new book series. The center's public service arm will put scholars to work in assisting media companies, government agencies, nonprofits and corporations in various industries in "finding practical solutions to critical problems."
