What to Wear

If the clothes make the (wo)man, the wrong ones can sabotage an interview, a presentation or other public appearance. Joyce Newman, PR NEWS' media training expert, offers the
following exclusive tips on how to dress for success with the media and other audiences. She also provides tips on accessories and grooming that will keep viewers' attention on
your message -- not your fashion ensemble.

Some basic rules for both sexes:

  • Don't wear a new outfit! Wear it before the interview to see how it moves.
  • If you wear glasses, get non-reflective lenses; avoid glasses with sun-sensitive lenses.
  • Pull jackets flat and leave unbuttoned.
  • Choose colors that don't blend into the set.

For Men:

Don't resist make-up! A little -- especially powder -- is necessary under studio lights.

  • Wear a dark suit and white or blue shirt; add color with your tie.
  • Wear socks that cover the entire calf.
  • Empty your pockets -- no jingling change or keys to distract from the message you are presenting.

For Women:

Wear your own makeup and make sure it looks natural. (The make-up artist can enhance it, if needed.)

  • No dangling earrings or heavy necklaces.
  • Wear business attire.
  • Pants work well; avoid short skirts.
  • Avoid light shoes and hose.

Wear some color -- blues, greens and pastels work best. Avoid black or white.
