Mary Wong
President
Office Depot Foundation
Mary Wong was named President of the Office Depot Foundation in 2007 after serving as Director of Community Relations for Office Depot since 2000. She is responsible for developing and implementing programs that help to fulfill the Foundation’s commitment to making a difference in communities around the globe where Office Depot conducts business and in which its associates live and work.
Under her direction, Office Depot has built an internationally respected program that was recognized in 2004 with the Corporate Stewardship Award for Large Businesses from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Business Civic Leadership Center. Her tenure includes creation of the Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program, through which nearly 1.8 million backpacks containing essential school supplies have been donated to disadvantaged children since 2001.
In March 2008, Office Depot was named to the Companies That Care Honor Roll by the Center for Companies That Care for the fifth consecutive year. In 2006, Office Depot was recognized as Humanitarian of the Year by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and received the Educational Excellence Award from the SHOPA Kids in Need Foundation, the Circle of Humanitarians Award from the American Red Cross and the Environmental Education Partner Award from Keep America Beautiful. Office Depot also has been acknowledged as a “Hunger Hero” by America’s Second Harvest and received the Light of Hope Award from Gifts In Kind International.
Ms. Wong is a frequent speaker to nonprofit organizations and business groups on the topic of corporate citizenship and philanthropy. In October 2008, she gave two presentations at the Gifts In Kind International’s inaugural “Innovation in Product Giving” conference. In 2007, she was an invited participant in “Compassion in Action,” a roundtable presented by the White House Office of Faith Based Initiatives. She also moderated a panel entitled “How Businesses Can Support Student Learning” at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Summit and served as a panelist on the topic of “Lessons Learned About Long-Term Recovery” for the U.S. Chamber Business Civic Leadership Center’s Disaster Assistance and Recovery Forum.
She serves on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for a Competitive Workforce and the National Advisory Board of the National Recovery Fund of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center, where she is Vice Chair of the Business Disaster Assistance and Recovery Program. She is a member of the White House Disaster Assistance Recovery and Volunteerism Committee. She also serves on the boards of directors of Gifts In Kind International, the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the Donors Forum of South Florida.
In April 2008, Ms. Wong was one of three individuals honored by Dress for Success for their achievements in corporate citizenship. In October 2007, she received the 2007 Leadership Award from the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL). She was honored by the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce in July 2007 with its inaugural “D.I.A.M.O.N.D. Award” (Dedicated, Inspiring, Accomplished, Motivated, Outstanding, Noble, and Driven), which goes to an outstanding businesswoman who encompasses these qualities. A recipient of the 2005 Corporate Award from Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center in Fort Lauderdale and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Soroptimist Club of Boca Raton/Deerfield Beach in 2004, Ms. Wong also has been honored with a Woman of the Year Award from City of Hope’s Florida National Office and the Outstanding Corporate Sponsor Award from Dream Foundation.
Ms. Wong has been with Office Depot 14 years, serving first as a store manager in Minnesota and then as a district manager based in Chicago, with responsibility for 17 stores in the upper Midwest.
