What are your favorite colors? Your answer may depend on how much your content gets shared on Pinterest. A Curulate study looked at more than 500,000 images posted by brands on Pinterest. More specifically, the study examined the pixels of 30 of those images to scrutinize faces, texture, hue, saturation, lightness, brightness and aspect ratio. Here’s what the study found when it comes to using color on Pinterest:

  • Images with several colors are repinned 3.25 times more often than those with only one main color
  • Very light and very dark images do not get repinned as often
  • Medium light images get repinned 20 times more than predominantly black images, eight times more than predominantly white
  • Blue images are repinned less than red images
  • Red, brown and orange images are repinned nearly twice as many times as other colored images
  • Images that are 50% saturated are repinned 400% more than those that are 100 percent saturated, and 10 times more than those that are totally desaturated
  • Images that contain less than 30% white space are repinned the most
  • Images with 40% or more background space are repinned half to a quarter as much as those with less
  • Images with a smooth texture are repinned much more than those with a rough texture--up to 17 times more
  • Brand images without faces receive 23% more pins

Now, you shouldn't go out and start repinning only smooth, 50% saturated faceless images with a red, orange and brown background, but it's definitely interesting to see the breakdown of what Pinterest users find appealing. Especially so when you consider that repinning is essentially adding an image to a collection of pictures that represents their online identity.

Keep this study in mind when curating your brand's Pinterest board: Pin the right way and you will find your way into these coveted collections.
