Wal-Mart PR Bashes Labor Unions

After a boost from record Thanksgiving weekend sales, Wal-Mart found itself in the media spotlight - but not for its booming holiday business. Instead, the retailer is making
news for allegedly using fear tactics to keep labor unions out. Former employees and union officials complain that the deep-pocketed discounter pays poor wages and provides
inferior health benefits while intimidating workers and discouraging them from organizing. Wal-Mart's VP of communications, Mona Williams, responded to an ABC News report last
week with an aggressive stance from Wal-Mart's corporate offices: "[The unions] have been unsuccessful for so long in recruiting us, it's an embarrassment for them ... If we did
not offer competitive pay and benefits in every market we're in, people wouldn't work here." We have a feeling this PR tactic isn't going to inject any holiday goodwill into the
company's relations with labor unions.
