Video Pick: SyFy Blows Up Social Media with #Sharknado

Sharknado has arrived, and it's winding its way through the Twitterverse, demolishing everything in sight. The SyFy original TV movie debuted at 9 p.m. eastern time last night, sucking up 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak, according to The Verge. (We've embedded its Tweet tracker below the clip). And yes, there are some PR takeaways buried in all of this camp. First, SyFy played to its brand incredibly well with this movie. What other channel could proudly produce a 90-minute film on a shark superstorm? Secondly, the film's social-media domination, which began last night and continues to burn white hot into today, is proof that thinking outside of the box occasionally can yield excellent results. You don't always have to follow the same old guidelines for viral success.

Without further adieu, here's the trailer for the awesome/terrible schlockfest that is Sharknado.
