2013 CSR Awards: Volunteer Program

Winner: Amerigroup - The Amerigroup Community Volunteers Program

Amerigroup has a clear goal for its Community Volunteers program—to set the company apart from its competition and establish itself as a best-in-class operation that helps those in need, supports the local communities it serves and provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for its associates. In 2011, 560 associates donated 21,000 hours of service to their communities, working with 669 different organizations. So far in 2012, volunteer hours are tracking 2% higher than in 2011 as more Amerigroup associates  participate in both company-sponsored opportunities and personal initiatives to help meet the challenges in their communities.

And those associates are benefiting themselves from a sense of real accomplishment: 87% of associates surveyed after a volunteer project felt the project met its vital goals, 88% believe they were provided with the adequate resources to complete their project; 63% reported a better understanding of Amerigroup's mission after completing a volunteer project; and 94% of respondents to the Community Engagement Survey said they are proud of the ways Amerigroup contributes to the communities served. —Steve Goldstein
