2013 CSR Awards: Pro Bono Campaign

Winner: Discovery Communications - Discovery Impact: Creating Change

In the fall of 2012, Discovery Communications continued to strengthen its CSR brand, Discovery Impact, through the launch of the third annual Discovery Impact: Creating Change, a 12-hour pro-bono marathon event where employees took on creative, marketing, IT and communications projects for 25 global nonprofit organizations in both the Silver Spring and London offices.

In addition to the marathon, Discovery employees hosted nearly 150 nonprofit representatives (all of whom were applicants of the marathon) at Discovery's global headquarters in Silver Spring and its European headquarters in London for a conference to discuss key issues around mission, communications, marketing goals and media vision.

Nonprofits were announced to participate in 32 projects during the program via an internal portal feature message, a press release and a push on social media, utilizing Twitter, Facebook and Discovery’s corporate blog.

In the end, nearly 200 Discovery employees in Silver Spring and London donated over 3,000 hours of their time to these projects. —Bill Miltenberg
