Strategy of the Week

Creating a powerful online news room that elevates your credibility with the press is no easy task, especially when you must rely on your IT department to ensure the site stays
fresh and includes all the information you need to disseminate. Clashing with IT is a commonplace problem for corporate communicators, but one that can be eliminated through
rigorous communication, says Reid Walker, director of global marketing communications for GE Global eXchange Services. Walker will present a PR NEWS Webinar on building and
maintaining the most effective press center for your organization on Tuesday, May 21. The following tips on cooperating with IT are a sneak peek at his presentation:

  • Align priorities: Don't assume that your priorities are the same as IT's priorities.
  • Have IT buy into the importance of your online news room by providing IT execs with data showing the importance of the online news room in terms of hits, view time, media
    coverage generated, etc.
  • Provide advance notice: Inform IT as far in advance as possible when an important news room item will be needed.
  • Don't cry wolf: Emergencies are inevitable. But if they happen once a week, IT is less likely to take your "high priority" requests seriously.
