Say Aloha to Two More Issues of Islands Magazine

Come January, when Islands Magazine will expand to eight issues per year. While there will be no tinkering with the features Islands readers already seem to enjoy, new features and some redesign at the front and back of the book will be added.

Additions include island news information and celebrity connections, book reviews and a column about the joys of Hawaii, says Joan Tapper, who's been the editor of the publication for 10 years.

Although Tapper relies a lot on "eyes and ears" of her freelance writers on islands to provide information, she is receptive to all types of pitches, especially press kits with visual material: P.O. Box 4728, Santa Barbara, CA 93140. You can also send email to editorial@islands. com or fax to 805/745-7102.

By the way, information does not need a tropical angle. Staten Island news is just as worthy for the magazine's pages, Tapper says.

The new sections and features are:

  • Horizons
  • : This section, in the front of the book, will feature newsy tidbits about islands, celebrity connections and interesting facts about islands.

  • ArtBeat
  • : This section contains reviews of books and movies about islands and a Q & A with artists and writers.

  • Columns
  • : A Hawaii column and a Caribbean column on island life as well as dispatches from around the world are planned.

  • The Guide
  • : The back of the book includes sections on the top-10 things to do on well-known islands and service information for travel to islands.
