SATELLITE SPOTLIGHT: DBS TELEVISION GOES MOBILE

The direct broadcasting satellite (DBS) industry has a chance to further persuade consumers to make the switch from cable television, thanks to a range of new products that enable viewers to receive satellite TV while traveling. The breakthrough equipment is produced by FutureTrak International Inc. [FTRK] and has been recognized by DirecTv Inc. [GMH] and EchoStar Communications Corp. [DISH] as a way to serve mobile DBS markets.

FutureTrak manufactures three solutions for the DBS sector-Space Scanner, Space Scanner II and the Micro Planar Antenna. The Space Scanner offers boat and RV owners the opportunity of receiving satellite broadcasts while parked or anchored at dockside. Space Scanner II offers satellite in-motion tracking, allowing viewers to tune in to their favorite programs as they are traveling. The Micro Planar Antenna is a small flat array receiver, designed with innovative microstrip technology.

DBS operators are understandably enthused by FutureTrak's innovations. "DirecTv is excited to be working with FutureTrak on the development of satellite tracking systems that allow our more than 3.8 million residential subscribers to take their DirecTv with them when they travel," said Terry Ferguson, DirecTv's vice president of business development and strategic planning. Greg Dunn of EchoStar commented, "FutureTrak's mobile DBS products give boating and RV enthusiasts another way to receive the tremendous programming choice and value offered by DISH Network."
