SPEAKERS
Sydney Ayers, APR, has worked in agency public relations, marketing and advertising for more than 20 years. Through her association with some of the leading public relations and advertising firms in the Rocky Mountain region, she has served a wide variety of consumer and business-to-business clients on the local, regional, national and international levels. She has been involved in a number of sectors including technology, business and professional services, manufacturing and real estate. She also has significant experience working with government, public and nonprofit institutions. Notable clients include Agilent Technologies, Raytheon, Denver International Airport, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Jefferson County (Colo.) Public Library and others. Prior to forming Ayers Public Relations, Sydney was at Servoss Public Relations, where she handled media relations, community outreach and special events for a variety of well-known clients including those in the technology, manufacturing and retail sectors. She also worked with DDB as an account executive and at a small local advertising and public relations firm, Neuwirth Koller, where she did everything from coordinating advertising copy to buying media to producing commercials.
Putting more than 15 years of experience to work on behalf of Fleishman-Hillard clients, Don Bartholomew specializes in public relations and social media research and measurement. His areas of specialization include digital media content analysis, brand tracking studies, ROI analysis and other quantitative and qualitative measures. In addition to providing strategic counsel for such high-tech and healthcare leaders as Dell, Samsung, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic and RadioShack, Don has significant experience working with startups and emerging companies. A member of the Measurement Commission of the Institute for Public Relations, Don writes a public relations and social media measurement blog and is a frequent speaker on public relations accountability, measurement and ROI. Before joining Fleishman-Hillard, Don managed the North American research and measurement practice for GCI Group and MWW Group, and was a managing director at Cunningham Communication and Alexander Ogilvy.
Lindsey Brown has worked for the GHCVB since December 2003 and manages media relations. In her role as director of marketing and public relations, Lindsey integrates her knowledge of media relations into the other aspects of marketing the city of Houston—promotions, advertising, graphic design and the city's Web site.
Sandra Block has been a reporter for USA TODAY since December 1995. She has been a personal finance reporter for USA TODAY since 1997 and has written the Your Money column, which appears every Tuesday, since 1998. She is co-author of "The Busy Family's Guide to Money" and "Easy Ways to Lower Your Taxes: Simple Strategies Every Taxpayer Should Know." Before joining USA TODAY, Sandra was a personal finance reporter for the Akron-Beacon Journal in Akron, Ohio. From 1993-1994, she was a fellow at the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship program for economics and business journalism at Columbia University. She has also worked for Dow Jones News Service, McGraw-Hill, the Pittsburgh Business Journal and the Wheeling-News Register. Sandra graduated from Bethany College in Bethany, WV in 1981. She lives in Arlington, VA.
Idil Cakim is a Senior Vice President of Interactive Media in GolinHarris’s Dialogue Group. She specializes in social media and word of mouth communications and works with clients from a wide array of industries, including healthcare, consumer electronics, CPG, professional services and technology. Idil also assists nonprofit clients in engaging online advocates and sustaining relations with them. Before joining GolinHarris, Idil was the Director of the Knowledge Development Group at Burson-Marsteller, focusing on interactive marketing and custom research. She managed Burson-Marsteller's Internet-related proprietary studies, including the e-fluentials. Between 1998 and 2001, Idil served at various posts within the Media and Entertainment Strategies Group at Fulcrum Analytics (formerly Cyber Dialogue), an Internet customer relationship management company, where she advised clients on online branding, content development, business models, customer acquisition and retention strategies. Idil served two terms on the board of Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) and continues to work on its research council. Eliza Newlin Carney Carney has written about Congress, lobbying, welfare reform, health care and campaign financing since joining National Journal in 1991. She previously covered Congress for States New Service in Washington, and worked as a daily newspaper reporter in the Philadelphia Area. She has a Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. from Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. Andrew Gilman is a former reporter and a lawyer. For the past 24 years, as CEO of CommCore he has coached executives, celebrities and public figures on effective communications in the media. Winner of the PR News Educator of the Year for 2007, Andrew is currently developing new strategies for blogs, Web media and Web 2.0. CommCore has assisted the Archdiocese of Washington for the Papal visit to the U.S., advised on litigation PR and consults on Renewable Fuels issues. CommCore offices are in New York, Washington and Los Angeles.
Catherine Hernandez is Vice President of National Corporate Communications for Kaiser Permanente. She is responsible for national internal communications, working closely with regional communicators, labor partners and leaders to develop and implement focused communications strategies, tools and programs that support the organization’s national objectives. This includes setting the strategic communications agenda, ensuring coordinated corporate communications messages, providing internal communications counsel and interacting with the National Leadership Team, Regional Presidents’ Group, The Permanente Federation, Medical Directors, union/labor partners and the interregional Strategic Communications Leaders Team. Catherine joined Kaiser Permanente in 2003 to lead the communications team supporting the development and launch of the organization’s electronic health record program, KP HealthConnect™. While in that role, Catherine led the internal and external communications activities for the program, including the inaugural KP HealthConnect Users’ Conference. Just prior to becoming Vice President, she led the internal Communications Services department, which serves as an in-house communications agency to national functions.
Karen Hinton is the President of Hinton Communications, a public relations firm based in Washington, DC. Since 2000, her company has provided media relations, media training and event planning services to corporate, nonprofit and government clients. Her expertise is promoting advocacy issues through the news media and media-related events. She previously worked as Acting Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from February 1998 until December 1999 for former HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo. Before that, she served as Secretary Cuomo’s Senior Advisor for Communications. As the Vice President for External Affairs for New American Schools, Karen led the communications, advocacy and fundraising arms of one of the nation’s leaders in educational consulting. She served as Press Secretary for former U.S. Congressman and Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy and as Director of Marketing/Communications for the D.C. Public School System.
Frank Mantero is responsible for coordinating GE's global citizenship efforts, developing and managing the company's Citizenship Report, monitoring the company's engagement with stakeholders and leading the company’s presence on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. He is the lead spokesperson for GE-sponsored disaster relief efforts and GE Foundation activities. In addition, he is responsible for the public policy grant portfolio for the GE Foundation, which includes programs on human rights, rule-of-law, climate change and globalization. Before taking on his present role, Frank was the Marketing Communications Leader at GE Capital-Railcar Services in Chicago, where he developed integrated internal and external marketing and communications plans to support the business' growth strategy. Before joining GE, Frank held a various leadership positions at CIGNA Healthcare and BellSouth, including managing brand communications, public relations, community relations and investor relations for the companies.
Rich Pesce is responsible for leading and developing Sprint Nextel’s external social media strategy and campaign implementation. In this role he helps develop innovative social media communication campaigns that support the advancement of Sprint’s corporate reputation as well as communications supporting Sprint products and services. Under his leadership, the Sprint social media team has developed an extensive customer engagement strategy that includes an award-winning social care program. Rich has an extensive background encompassing a wide range of activities including planning and implementing strategic campaigns promoting both consumer and B2B products and services, media relations, planning and executing marketing and media related events, large-scale thought leadership campaigns, branding campaigns and product launches.
Michelle Russo leads corporate communications at Discovery Communications, with 150 worldwide networks programmed in 38 languages across 180 countries. She is a corporate spokesperson in the national, local and trade media, and coordinates the communications activities among the company’s business units to ensure consistent messaging and a unified global brand. Michelle's day-to-day focus is the strategic positioning of Discovery’s global assets and corporate executives. She oversees the company’s financial media strategy, corporate media relations, executive communications, corporate marketing materials, internal communications and corporate social responsibility. Michelle joined Discovery in 2004 and during her tenure has managed myriad functions, including international communications and corporate events. Michelle has led the communications strategy and execution for a number of key corporate priorities, including Discovery becoming a public company; Discovery’s 25th Anniversary celebration that featured the first-ever Global Volunteerism Day, which is now an annual event; as well as numerous acquisitions and joint ventures.
Bill Schneider, a leading U.S. political analyst, is the Omer L. and Nancy Hirst Professor Public Policy at George Mason University and Distinguished Senior Fellow and Resident Scholar at Third Way in Washington, D.C. He is a contributor to CNN International and was CNN's Senior Political Analyst from 1990 to 2009. Bill has been labeled "the nation's electionmeister" by The Washington Times and "the Aristotle of American politics" by The Boston Globe. He was a member of the CNN political team that won an Emmy for its 2006 election coverage and a Peabody for its 2008 coverage. Bill received his B.A. from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University, where he subsequently taught in the Department of Government. From 1990 through 1995, he was the Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Visiting Professor of American Politics at Boston College. In 2002, he was the Fred and Rita Richman Distinguished Visiting Professor at Brandeis University. He received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Brandeis University in 2008.
Diane Schwartz is Senior Vice President & Group Publisher of the Media Communications Group at Access Intelligence, a business-to-business media information company based in Rockville, Maryland, with offices worldwide.
